Language learning journey of a school student from Tamil Medium.

Two weeks back, I asked Princy (our tutor), “How is Divya’s speaking? We have planned to do an interview. Is she ready?”

I had handled only a few sessions in grammar and writing. Princy and Surendhiran (also our tutor) had taken care of her entire training. So I needed their honest assessment and I wanted to know if she was ready for the interview.

“I think she has confidence now,” Princy said. “She may still make mistakes while speaking. But the good thing is she realises them immediately and corrects herself on the spot.” (You can notice this self-correction in her interview.)

“That’s great,“ I replied. “That’s more than enough. Let’s do the interview.”

Divya has just completed her schooling in a government school, where the medium of instruction was Tamil. Before joining our training, she hadn’t spoken even a single sentence in English.

Listen to her now. She speaks so beautifully after just four months of training. Of course, she still has a long way to go, but she’s on the right path and has the right tools to guide her along the way.

I often tell people that the medium of instruction doesn’t really matter in Tamil Nadu. Thanks to Arignar Anna’s Two-Language Policy, students here are exposed to English from a young age, no matter what their medium of instruction is.

Yes, studying in an English-medium school may change the starting point of the learning journey to some extent. But from a learner’s perspective, the medium of instruction should never be a determining factor in learning and speaking English.

Even if you’ve done your entire schooling in Tamil medium, we can help you speak English in just a few months.

Divya’s learning and progress

During her pre-course assessment, Divya couldn’t write anything. She had just come out of school and didn’t know where to begin.

After completing the grammar module, she was able to write like this. Have a look at her initial writing here:

Just one month later, after completing the writing module, look at how much she had improved. This is her writing after the writing phase.

At Mozhi, we strongly believe that if you can write well, you will be able to speak well. Sooner than you expect. Writing builds clarity, correctness, and confidence in your spoken English.
